A Natural Wonder from the Time of the Big Bang Theory!

Day 1: Hyderabad to Lonar – 460 Kms
My dear friend Vamshi and I packed our bags, revved up our bikes, and embarked on a thrilling ride from Hyderabad to witness the mighty Lonar Lake in Maharashtra. Covering approximately 460 kilometers, our route blended national highways with state roads, winding through lush green landscapes. The anticipation grew as we reached Lonar later in the afternoon and settled into our cozy abode at Hotel Vikrant.
Our excitement peaked when we imagined gazing upon the moonlit lake. However, our hopes were dashed—the lake remained closed after evening hours, and the rain gods put on a spectacular show that night. But as true riders, we knew that every twist in the road held its own magic, and we ventured the local landscape in search of some lip-smacking food. Then post dinner we rested to unveil the Lonar’s secrets the next day.

Day 2: Lonar Sarovar & the Temples around Lonar Lake
5+ Kms
We began our day early after breakfast to explore the highlight of our trip – Lonar Lake. A short 10-minute ride brought us to the lake’s main entrance, where we were accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide who shared fascinating details about Lonar.
Historically, the lake was formed by the impact of an asteroid colliding with Earth.
Imagine traveling back over 50,000 years and then fast-forwarding to the 12th century, where architectural marvels still stand, recounting tales from our ancient scriptures like the Mahabharata and Ramayana.
Lonar Lake remains a mysterious wonder, intriguing all who visit. Its highly alkaline water is unsuitable for consumption and lacks fish or aquatic life, yet it supports algae, a boon for migratory birds like flamingos. The surrounding area boasts dense forests; beyond the lakebed, groundwater is refreshingly sweet and edible. Near Kamalja Devi Mandir, a well exemplifies this contrast, with one side offering alkaline water and the other, sweet water. At Gomukh Temple, a perennial freshwater stream flows, adding to the lake’s water, nevertheless without reducing its alkalinity.
The dense forest is loaded with diverse flora and fauna, including leopards, wild boars, foxes, and hyenas.
A leisurely jungle walk offered serene moments, showcasing the planet’s rich biodiversity , believed to possess medicinal properties that can cure various ailments.
In 2010, NASA also explored Lonar Lake, as seen in this National Geographic video
The area boasts over 12 temples, each steeped in history and significance, complementing the natural wonder of Lonar Lake.
After trekking around the lake, we visited a viewpoint where a watchtower offered a mesmerizing view of the perfectly circular lake, prompting reflections on the wonders of nature and evolution.

Things to keep in check:
- Caps / Hats to cover your head as it will be hot
- Water for sure
- Good walking shoes as you have to walk!
- Camera if you want to take pictures 🙂
- Food if you are always hungry (Ensure you carry back all the trash please, common sense)
Don’t miss the other temples worth visiting.
Day 3: Lonar to Nanded – Gurudwara Visit – 146 Kms
After exploring ancient history, our next destination was Nanded, renowned for hosting Gurudwara where Guru Nanak stayed. The journey from Lonar to Nanded was brief, and we arrived around lunchtime, checking into Hotel Akruti. After settling in, we dressed to visit the Gurudwara.
The Gurudwara was truly remarkable, a place filled with positive energy, offering a refreshing experience.
After recharging ourselves with this spiritual visit, we returned to the hotel, feeling the end of our much-needed break approaching.
