A Monsoon Escape to Chitrakote Waterfalls
Riding to the Niagara of India
A trip to Chitrakote Waterfalls takes you straight through the dense jungles of the Eastern Ghats. Once you cross Warangal, the road enters the Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary near Tadvai—a breathtaking stretch wrapped in thick forest canopy with almost no traffic. Being a monsoon ride, the continuous rains turn the entire corridor into a mesmerizing, vibrant green.Crossing out of Telangana and entering Chhattisgarh, the landscape opens. Winding roads are flanked by swelling monsoon streams on either side, taking you through region where the Indian Armed Forces and CRPF maintain security. Ensure you pull over politely for any checkpoints with your documentation ready—a small gesture of respect for the forces ensuring we can ride safely through these interior corridors.
Depending on your pace, the goal is to cover enough distance to pull up right before sunset for your first view of Chitrakote Waterfalls.
And it does not disappoint.
I booked a stay right opposite the roaring falls {Nature View Resort} —just a stone’s throw away. This gives you ample time to simply sit back and watch the massive expanse of water plunge over the cliff. A small tip: head down late at night when the crowds fade. The waterfall is illuminated after dark, offering a peaceful, dramatic view under the open sky.
Day 2: Misty Trails, Local Culture, and Hidden Spots
Morning light brings a completely different perspective. You can climb down to the riverbank for a full, sweeping view of the falls. If you value peace like I do, find a quiet spot along the rocks and just soak in the scale of it all. Most people are busy framing live videos or chasing the perfect cell phone shot, so finding a secluded corner lets you experience the raw energy of the river uninterrupted.
(Side note: I took this trip in the first week of August, but writing about it later lets me relive the entire ride all over again!)
If you want to stretch your legs further, Chhattisgarh has plenty of backroads worth exploring. I geared up and rode out toward the scenic switchbacks around Michnar Hills—an absolute treat on two wheels.
As the sky poured down heavily, I headed toward the town of Jagdalpur to sit out the downpour. I stumbled upon a cozy local cafe that beautifully highlighted Bastar’s indigenous heritage and art. They had a small souvenir section stocked with traditional handicrafts and regional food items, so I picked up a few local artifacts before heading back.
Back at the resort, I freshened up and walked the riverbanks once more as evening set in. It was a thoroughly relaxing way to wind down—even if it resulted in a few terrible self-portraits that definitely won’t make it onto the blog!
Day 3: The Wet Ride Back
Day 3 meant bidding adieu to Chitrakote and returning to regular life.
The return journey was a classic monsoon ride: steady downpours, a mix of slush and potholes, followed by clearing skies on the final stretch leading back into Hyderabad. Even with the miles ticking away, the sound of the roaring falls stays with you long after the engine cuts off.
That’s the beauty of trips like these—just another unforgettable route added to the memory bank for life.
